This is a serious issue! It's happened to me, too. Developers: an update needs to be released where:
1.) The NPC cannot detect you while you're on or in front of the stairs.
2.) Move the NPC over a block.
3.) Remove the NPC.
I've had to reset this game twice due to it crashing and having issues.
