Episode 4: A Cause for a Paracaw!
Cole stepped off the granite slab and onto the next flat rock.
He strained to move up the steep hill, Ella right behind him and Ash already waiting at the top for them. Ella was constantly telling him to hurry up, but he was just trying to be careful not to lose balance and tumble down the large hill to his death. He moved over the spontaneous patches of grass growing between the stairs of stones. The sole of his hoes was being worn from all of the walking, and soon there’d be holes in them.
He had a couple of yards up still to go, but the stone staircase swerved to the right and left a lot, so that meant a lot more than a couple of yards.
He reached his foot out to the next stone slab and the sole of his shoe scrapped against the edge. As he tried to gain footing on the rock and lift himself up, his foot lost its grip on the rock and he lost his balance, falling on the rock.
“Cole!” Ella raced toward him, sprinting up the rocks. She bent down beside him. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
She helped him up and they continued up the rock staircase.
Cole reached the top and Ella stepped up right behind him, Ash, keeping the lead and walking onto a pathway that ran through the forest. They walked under the high canopy, dithered light seeping through the treetops and foliage cultivating at the edge of the dirt path. They bent under low branches and stepped over fallen trees and overgrown plants, continuing down the path. Then something caught Ash’s eye. He turned to his right and gripped a vacant pokéball at his belt. A Pokémon was waddling down the side of the path, red and white plumage streaked across its body.
He moved his hand to his pocket and gripped his Pokédex, swinging the top up and a voice activating after it scanned the passing Pokémon. “Paracaw, the paradise Pokémon. Paracaw are cheeky Pokémon, always in a happy mood, but very competitive in battle.” He flipped it down and stuffed it in his pocket. He was going to catch it.
“Pikachu, let’s catch ourselves a Paracaw!”
Pikachu leaped from Ash’s shoulder and caught the Paracaw’s attention, sparks flying from its red cheeks. The Paracaw squawked in anger and sped forward on its stubby legs and rammed Pikachu in the side, sending the yellow mouse flying into the bushes. Paracaw continued waddling down the path. Pikachu jumped from the bushes and yelled out to the Paracaw in its squealing tone. It bent down and a larger sparks flew from its cheeks as it raked at the ground with its hind leg. Then, it shot forward, bolts of electricity flying through the air, and it bashed into Paracaw, sending it too into the bushes. Pikachu waited for the Pokémon’s return, crouched on the ground, back hunched, sparks flying. Ash stood nearby, ready to give more commands to Pikachu. Then the group frowned and Pikachu looked to Ash for guidance.
Paracaw didn’t step from the bushes in retaliation. It was gone.
Pikachu scampered forward and leapt up into Ash’s arms. It hopped onto his back pack and rested its head on his hat.
“Why did it run off like that?” Cole asked, walking over to the bush.
“I don’t know, but I’m gonna find it and catch it.” Ash clenched his fist and marched off into the underbrush.
“Wait, Ash. You don’t even know where it went.” Ella pitched.
“I don’t care, I’m going to find it!”
The group walked off into the forest.
James turned to Jesse in astonishment.
“That Paracaw was strong.” He said in disbelief.
“Yeah it was!” Jesse answered standing up in the bushes and looking down at the path. “Did you see how it knocked Pikachu so far?” She turned around and looked at James. “So how’re we gonna get it?”
He shrugged. “That’s Meowth’s job, not mine.”
Meowth looked at her, thinking of the many times they’ve been beaten by Ash and his Pikachu. Then he thought of the way Paracaw fought. He smiled.
Ash stepped from the bush and peered down into another.
“Paracaw.” He said to himself. “Where are you?” His voice was in a stage whisper, as if he was yelling, but trying not to be heard. He looked up and glanced at a tree, peering up into the canopy. No Paracaw.
“Hey, Ash.” Cole ran up to him and stood nearby, still checking for the Paracaw. “I wonder why it didn’t fly.”
“I don’t know, maybe it never learned.”
“Or maybe something tragic happened in its life that made it not want to.” Ella said from up in a tree.
“Yeah; maybe.”
She jumped down and they continued looking.
Then a red bird stepped from a nearby bush and started waddling across to another one. It was Paracaw. Cole and Ella raced over to him as he commanded Pikachu to attack.
Pikachu jumped from his shoulder and lashed out its tail at the colorful bird. Paracaw leaped back and gave out a squawk of anger. It wanted them to leave it be. The bird raised its wings and glared at Pikachu, then, it swung its wing down and a gust of wind whipped up and swirled at Pikachu. The wind thrashed about at the yellow mouse as Paracaw waddled into a nearby bush.
Pikachu pushed through the maelstrom of wind and dashed into the bush. There was nothing but a rustle then the two Pokémon appeared, tussling on the ground. The Paracaw slashed at Pikachu with its talons and pushed the Pokémon off of it.
Pikachu hit the ground and rolled over, regaining its stance, then dashing forward at the bird. Paracaw moved sideways and let Pikachu race by. It held its wing back and bent down, then contracted its muscle, making its wing look ridged and metal-like. It scraped the ground with its right talon, ready to attack. Then it did. It moved across the ground and its wing collided with Pikachu, but the yellow mouse held strong, sparks flying from its cheeks. It tumbled back across the ground and once its stopped, it dashed back at the bird, hitting it with full force, sending it too tumbling cross the ground.
The Paracaw stopped cold on the ground and looked up. Pikachu was emitting large volts of electricity now, ready to attack again if necessary. But it wasn’t necessary, for Paracaw didn’t move, it just lay there and stared at Pikachu.
That’s went Ash, pulled a vacant pokéball from his belt and enlarged it in his hand, throwing it at the Paracaw that lay on the ground.
The ball enveloped the bird in a red light and dropped to the ground. It rocked back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, then stopped and its button glowed red and the ball clicked.
Paracaw was his.
“Yes! I’ve caught Paracaw!” Ash said, jumping about and picking up the ball.
He threw it to the ground and the red and white bird appeared.
They greeted the bird and introduced themselves. The Pokémon looked up eager to travel now, but still a little upset about the battle.
Then Ash asked the question that was on all of their minds: Why can’t you fly?
The Pokémon just sank in its puffy plumage and sulked on the ground. It let out what sounded like a whimper, it was embarrassed.
Just then, a long vine whipped through the forest canopy and wrapped itself around Pikachu, pulling it from Ash’s shoulder. Before there was any time to comprehend what just happened, another vine lashed through the treetops and pulled Paracaw from the ground.
“Team Rocket!”
They heard a chuckle.
Ash started forward, leaping over the underbrush and bending under branches. He swerved around trees and jumped over logs, breaking out of the forest and looking up at the floating Meowth balloon. He gritted his teeth and clenched his fists as he saw Pikachu and Paracaw suspended in the air by two thick green vines. The Carnivine waved the two Pokémon in the air, as if bragging that they had them, it raised them higher to make sure they were out of reach.
“Give them back!” Ella shouted.
“That’s no use.” Ash told her, gripping a pokéball. “They’re thieves that never learn.”
Ash pulled a pokéball from his belt and just as he swung his arm out, he remembered that he had no Pokémon. His two were dangling in the air by a pair of long green vines. He attached the ball to his belt with a click.
“Pikachu, shock ‘em!” Ash shouted, but just as Pikachu was about to let out its surge of electricity Jesse interrupted.
“Uh, uh, uh,” she waved her finger. “If you shock us, you shock your friend too, and last I heard, Paracaw are flying type Pokémon and what are flying types weak against? Oh yeah…electric.” She chuckled and they continued floating away.
Ash gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. This situation happened a lot.
Cole threw out a pokéball and Purrlit leaped to the ground, flame hot and back arched. Ella sent out Pruddy, the pale cat’s purple tail swinging elegantly as it landed.
Purrlit raced forward and as it was underneath the balloon spit a conflagration of fire up toward the dark green basket. Just as the flames were about to set the basket ablaze, Jesse sent out Wobbuffet and it put it hands to its head. The flames stopped and turned, racing back toward Purrlit. Pruddy leapt into the air, a smile on its face and the flames stopped again, racing back to the basket.
Then, the flames dispersed; just a poof and gone.
James sent out Solshrub and the Pokémon rolled in the air, landing on the rail of the basket. Pruddy spun about, the air around it sparkling, then stopped and a beam of light flew through the air. Solshrub braced itself and just as the beam of light was to hit them, a shield of energy wrapped itself around the balloon, deflecting the attack.
The beam faded and the shield shrunk until it was nothing.
At that moment, Solshrub was lifted from the rail with a strong force and pushed into Carnivine with even more force. Carnivine lurched back with Solshrub and fell into the basket. The vines lost their grip on the two Pokémon and the creatures fell through the air. Pikachu clasped Paracaw and the two squealed as they fell through the cool air.
Ash ran to their growing shadow and looked up at the two Pokémon that were racing toward him. He reached his arms out and they landed in them, causing him to pitch back. He brought the close in a hug.
“No! I won’t let you spoil this chance!” Jesse shouted from the balloon. She threw a pokéball to the ground and a large snake slithered toward them. The Pokémon chose its target quickly and wrapped itself around Pruddy, hissing in delight. Paracaw dashed forward on its small feet, talons sinking into the moist earth, and its wing rigged and strong. It slammed into the snake, but fell backward. The skin was too thick to pierce. The tail reached out with great celerity and latched onto the bird, the bird squawking in terror. Its grip tightened on the two captured Pokémon.
Purrlit stood off in the distance and watched, horrified. Pruddy was crying for mercy and Paracaw was screeching in pain. Its friends were hurt.
Purrlit came to its senses and made into a mad dash toward the large snake. It unsheathed its claws and leapt into the air. It swung its paw back, bringing it and its claws down on the snake. It raked and raked and raked with its sharp claws, slashing at the rough skin. No blood was drawn, nothing but the slight hiss of the creature holding it friends.
The snake rolled Paracaw down its tail and reached out toward Purrlit, but the cat wasn’t going to be taken captive. It leaped back and raced to the snake’s side, slashing with all of its might at the skin near Paracaw.
Blood seeped from the small cut inflicted.
The snake winced in pain and loosened its grip for a moment, a moment just long enough for Paracaw to slip from the snake’s grasp. Paracaw squawked and bent its wing and made it rigged, racing forward and slamming into the snake.
The already weakened snake tumbled back and let go of Pruddy.
Pikachu dashed into the action and let out a surge of electricity sending it crashing into Seviper. The snake flew through the air and bashed into the balloon. The thieves were nothing but a twinkle in the sky.
Ash clasped Paracaw in his arms and smiled down at it. It smiled back and squawked in delight. “You did good, Paracaw.” He said. The Pokémon squawked again. “But why didn’t you fly?”
It shook its head.
“Can you fly?” Ella asked.
It nodded.
“Are you too scared?” Cole asked.
It nodded.
“Why?” Ash asked. It shook its head. It didn’t want to say. “Well we’ll help you out, Paracaw. Trust me. You’ll be flying in no time!” The Paracaw looked worried and buried its face in Ash’s arms.
Ash walked to the counter and pushed his pokéballs to the nurse on the other side. She smiled and placed them gently in a red machine. Cole did the same, as well as Ella, and the three of them made their way to a nearby couch.
“Well if it isn’t Ella.” A voice chirped.
Ella turned and saw a girl of her age. She was dressed in green, along with her hair being lime green.
“What did you do with your hair?” Ella said sarcastically. She ran forward and wrapped her arms around her friend. She turned to Ash and Cole who were smiling. “This is my old friend Trissy. We weren’t exactly friends at first but we learned to like each other. Our sisters were friends and we were forced to spend time together.”
They let go of one another and Ella walked over to Cole and Ash.
“What’re you doing here, though?” Ella asked.
“To sign up for type contests, what else?”
“You mean—”
“Yeah, you can sign up for type contests here.”
“Would you like to sign up?” the nurse said from across the room. She overheard their conversation. No wonder, they were the only ones talking.
“Yeah.” The two walked over to the counter.
The nurse did some high-tech stuff on a computer. A green light flashed over the two girls and scanned their faces. It moved up and down then faded. The nurse pressed a button and a small device on the counter printed a card from each of them. The card was thick, not like a playing card, more like an I.D. The girls took them and put them into their pockets.
“What’s a Type Contest?” Ash asked.
Ella answered. “It’s just like a normal contest, you know what those are, right?” Ash nodded and Ella continued. “Except you use a certain Pokémon in particular, the one the contest is requiring. You then battle the type coordinator and the winner receives a type ribbon. Once you get five ribbons, you can enter the Grand Festival.”
The nurse tapped her hand on the counter to get the girls’ attention. “Excuse me, pardon my interruption, but here you are.” She slid two steel cases across the counter. She opened one to show them the inside. It was stuffed with a grey fabric and five indentations were made in the form of ribbons. They thanked her and made their way toward the door.
“Now I just have to get five ribbons.” Ella said closing her case and putting it in her bag.
“Me too.”
“I’ll get all five ribbons then I’ll go into the Grand Festival and win!”
“Not if I beat ya to it!”
“We’ll see.”
Cole stepped off the granite slab and onto the next flat rock.
